NDLEA serves Kashamu extradition notice

NDLEA serves Kashamu extradition notice

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has served Buruji Kashamu, the Ogun east senator-elect, a notice of application for his extradition to the United States.

Mitchell Ofoyeju, head, public affairs of the narcotic agency, said this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

He said NDLEA served the notice to Kashamu on June 1, adding that the application was contained in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/479/2015 and that a copy has been made available to the chief judge of the federal high court in Abuja.

The office of the attorney-general of the federation is seeking the extradition of Kashamu to answer alleged drug trafficking charges.

The agency had laid six days siege on Kashamu’s Lagos residence in the bid to arrest and extradite him but a federal high court in Lagos granted Kashamu’s prayers for an order restraining his arrest.

Kashamu had filed a suit against the inspector-general of police (IGP) and 13 others.

He alleged that there was a conspiracy between the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria and the US to humiliate him and prevent his swearing-in as senator.

He accused Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria of plotting to stop his progress politically and of desperation to use propaganda against him to give impression that he had been convicted for drug-related offences in the United Kingdom (UK) or US.

He claimed the international criminal police organisation (INTERPOL) was instigated to investigate him on the basis of these allegations in 2008, after which the agency published a report dated March 4, 2008, saying that he was never declared wanted

Blatter to resign as FIFA president

Blatter to resign as FIFA president

Sepp Blatter has confirmed that he will resign his post as president of the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), four days after he was re-elected for his fifth successive term.

Ahead of the election, there were numerous calls for Blatter’s resignation after a corruption scandal that led to the arrest of seven leading officials of the federation, but he rebuffed the calls and went ahead to contest and win the election.

Now, Blatter acknowledges that his mandate “does not have the support of everybody” and he has called an extraordinary FIFA congress “as soon as possible” to elect a new president.

“I have been reflecting deeply about my presidency and about the forty years in which my life has been inextricably bound to FIFA and the great sport of football. ,” he said in Zurich on Tuesday.

“I cherish FIFA more than anything and I want to do only what is best for FIFA and for football. I felt compelled to stand for re-election, as I believed that this was the best thing for the organisation.

That election is over but FIFA’s challenges are not. FIFA needs a profound overhaul.

“While I have a mandate from the membership of FIFA, I do not feel that I have a mandate from the entire world of football – the fans, the players, the clubs, the people who live, breathe and love football as much as we all do at FIFA. Therefore, I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress.

“I will continue to exercise my functions as FIFA President until that election. The next ordinary FIFA Congress will take place on 13 May 2016 in Mexico City. This would create unnecessary delay and I will urge the Executive Committee to organise an Extraordinary
Congress for the election of my successor at the earliest opportunity.

“This will need to be done in line with FIFA’s statutes and we must allow enough time for the best candidates to present themselves and to campaign. Since I shall not be a candidate, and am therefore now free from the constraints that elections inevitably impose, I shall be able to focus on driving far-reaching, fundamental reforms that transcend our previous efforts.

“For years, we have worked hard to put in place administrative reforms, but it is plain to me that while these must continue, they are not enough. The Executive Committee includes representatives of confederations over whom we have no control, but for whose actions FIFA is held responsible. We need deep-rooted structural change.

“The size of the Executive Committee must be reduced and its members should be elected through the FIFA Congress. The integrity checks for all Executive Committee members must be organised centrally through FIFA and not through the confederations. We need term limits not only for the president but for all members of the Executive Committee. I have fought for these changes before and, as everyone knows, my efforts have been blocked. This time, I will succeed.

“I cannot do this alone. I have asked Domenico Scala to oversee the introduction and implementation of these and other measures. Mr. Scala is the Independent Chairman of our Audit and Compliance Committee elected by the FIFA Congress. He is also the Chairman of the
ad hoc Electoral Committee and, as such, he will oversee the election of my successor. Mr. Scala enjoys the confidence of a wide range of constituents within and outside of FIFA and has all the knowledge and experience necessary to help tackle these major reforms.

“It is my deep care for FIFA and its interests, which I hold very dear, that has led me to take this decision. I would like to thank those who have always supported me in a constructive and loyal manner as President of FIFA and who have done so much for the game that we all love. What matters to me more than anything is that when all of this is over, football is the winner.”

Aside last week’s arrests on charges of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering as part of a US prosecution that also indicted 14 people, Swiss authorities are investigating the award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to their hosts

Oyegun: Boko Haram in for surprise from Buhari

Oyegun: Boko Haram in for surprise from Buhari

John Oyegun, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says the Boko Haram insurgents will be in for surprises for daring the resolve of President Muhammadu Buhari to end the insurgency.

He said this while fielding questions from state house correspondents after the party’s national working committee’s visit to the president in Abuja on Tuesday.

Oyegun said it was obvious that the insurgents were daring the president’s resolve.

“It is obvious that the insurgents as you call them are trying his resolve and I have a feeling that they will be in for surprises,” he said.

“The president is giving security top priority. He was elected to protect Nigerian lives and that is what he is precisely giving first priority to.”

Oyegun said officials of the party visited Buhari to pay their respect and pledge support for his administration.

He added that the president briefed the party officials on some topical national issues and they were pleased.

Oyegun said the expectations of Nigerians from the government were high, adding that the party was on the proper path towards responding to the yearnings and needs of Nigerians.

“Very straight forward, I led my colleagues in the national working committee of the All Progressives Congress to come and pay their respect to the president,” he said.

“We had not done so before now, because we wanted the events to move to the ultimate climax which is his installation as the president and commander-in-chief and that has occurred.

“So, we just came here to felicitate with him and pledge our loyalty and determination to work with him through thick and thin.

“That he can always depend on the party that he used as a platform to become the President of this great nation.

“We noted the fact thatyes expectations are extremely high and that the public expects a totally new dawn.

“And on that score, we said that we are with you; you Mr president you will succeed because the entire party will be galvanised as one man behind you to ensure that days into this presidency, Nigerians do in fact see that things are changing.

“All the problems will not be solved in one day. There is no switch that you will flick to bring that kind of eventuality.

“But what Nigerians want is to be sure that we have gotten it right and that we are on the proper path toward answering their long frustration towards ameliorating their condition and that is what they will get.”

Oyegun said the president had put the party in the front burner in the selection of his cabinet.
He expressed confidence that there would be no leadership crisis at the national assembly adding that the party was conscious of the fact that as a separate arm of the government, it would elect its own leaders.

Photos: Father arrested for sleeping with his daughters & nieces in Oyo

Tajudeen Awoniyi, a herbalist residing in Oyo state has been arrested by men of the Oyo state police command for repeatedly having sex with two of his daughters and two of his nieces all aged 14, 15, 15 and 17 at his residence in Akinyele Local Government area in Oyo state.

While being paraded today at the state police headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, Tajudeen denied the allegations but his denial was countered by the statements made against him by the young ladies.

While recounting how he molested her, one of his nieces said ;
"On that fateful day, his daughters came to our house and wanted us to follow them to their place. On getting there, her father told us he would give us soap by mid night which we must use to bathe. Around 1:00am he woke me up, gave me a black soap and asked me to go and take my bath. After taking my bath, I went to him and he placed something under his tongue and asked me to sleep on a bench. He had sex with me. Afterwards, I was bleeding and he asked me to go to bed. By morning, he sent my sister and me out of his house.”

‘Change fever’ catches Aso Rock staff

‘Change fever’ catches Aso Rock staff
On a good day, the car park at the presidential villa, Abuja, would not fill up until 10am. The staff at the nation’s seat of power used to take their time before coming to office.

But that may no longer be the case.

On Monday, with the staff expecting President Muhammadu Buhari to come to office very early, it was a different scenario altogether.

By 8:30am, the car park was filled up — most of the staff were already at their duty posts.

However, Buhari and his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, had not got to the villa at the time of this report.
They were preoccupied with some state function at the defence house, where both used as temporary offices after winning the election.

Buhari was known for his strictness with punctuality when he was military head of state as this was one of the highpoints of the war against indiscipline (WAI).

The wind of change is already blowing across the villa — but for how long?
