13 Dead, Others Injured in Abia Road Accident Yesterday.

No fewer than 13 persons died on Sunday after a commercial bus en route from Enugu State had a head-on collision with a trailer at Ofeme Junction on Umuahia Road, Abia State.

Two other passengers in the 18-seater bus belonging to Peace Mass Transit Limited with number plate, AKL895YY, reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident that happened around 11am.The trailer en route to Enugu State from Port Harcourt, River State, was said to be on top speed and lost control, veering into the path of the bus, which was a few kilometres away from its destination – Umuahia.

It was gathered that the trailer driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.

An eyewitness, who identified herself simply as Sharon, said some of the passengers were mangled in the bus while  others were thrown on the road as crowd gathered to rescue the injured. She said she was in another bus travelling to Ebonyi State, adding that he counted eight lifeless bodies at the spot.

She said, “It (the accident) happened just now along Umuahia Road. Please rescue team should try and locate them. Eight lives claimed already.”

It was learnt that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps later arrived at the scene to remove the remains of the deceased.

Another witness, who did not want his name in print, said 13 persons died in the crash, blaming it on the recklessness of the trailer driver.

“The bus driver was driving at a good speed because he was almost at Umuahia which is the final destination. It was the driver of the trailer that lost control of the vehicle because he was speeding and suddenly, it derailed into the path of the bus. Thirteen passengers, including the bus driver died instantly. Only three persons were rescued alive and two of them are in critical conditions,” he said.

The Sector Commander, FRSC Abia State Command, Mrs. Stella Uche, confirmed that 13 persons died. She said the two injured victims had been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for treatment and urged motorists to install speed limiters into their vehicles to avert accidents and loss of lives.

She said, “The command received a distress call at 11.20am and its operatives moved to the scene of the accident at Ofeme Junction immediately. The accident was caused by excess speeding on the part of the Man Disel (trailer) driver. It lost control and veered into the route of the bus. Out of the 16 persons in the bus, two injured while 13 persons – nine males, three females and a child – died. The injured were taken to the FMC, Umuahia and the corpses had been deposited in the mortuary.

“We have been orientating motorists on the dangers of excess speeding. There is need for motorists to calm down while driving. We have also identified loss of control as one of the causes of crashes. In the times of emergencies, one should not drive beyond 100 km per hour so that the vehicle can easily be controlled in case of any sudden complication. I want to urge motorists to buy into speed limiter initiative of the FRSC to forestall crashes.”

When our correspondent contacted one of the numbers on the bus, a man, who identified himself as a member of Peace Mass Transit’s management, but declined to disclose his name, said he was aware of the incident. He, however, refused to give further comment.

He said, “Yes, one of our buses was involved in an accident along Umuahia Road. Our people in Umuahia are aware and they are already at the scene.”

ITC Ltd: Conversion of Bank Properties without Permission.

ITC: Ezeji changing plate numbers of the busses.

It's no longer news that the only Vibrant Industry every Imolite can be proud of, is allegedly on the verge of collapse owing to incompetence and mismanagement by the three man committee approved by the state Governor (Rocas Okorocha) to run the transport company.

The management committee led by Hon Lasbery Okereafor Anyanwu flouted a court order which was delivers by Justice Ogala at Abuja State High Court 9. The fallout of the court order was to pay the Banks #110 million because of the poor administrative incompetence, the state government is now owing the Banks the tune of  #500,  million which the court asked the ITC management to remit to the Banks.

Instead the ITC management started hiding the buses, changing the vehicle licence plate number and also cleaning the inscription of  banks with white paints so  that it can't be identified and this act was perpetrated by the current Chief Driver  Mr Ezeji Benard with the approval of Hon Lasbery Okafor Anyanwu with a clear evidence and exhibit.

One of the franchise drivers who spoke on anonymity said that the franchise owners are about to go on strick as their money is yet to be paid them.  The management is not giving them a substantial reason for withholding their money.

He also disclosed that he heard part of the franchised money was allegedly used to settle the State Governor,  with the claim that the committee has paid the governor close to #200 million since they took over from Chief Emeka Duru (Ginikana global) 8 months ago.

EFCC Arrests Amosu’s wife, recovers $1mn From Soakaway pit

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the wife of the immediate past Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (rtd) in relation to the ongoing investigation into the $2.1 billion arms procurement fund

Today.ng reports that Mrs. Lara Amosu was arrested last week in Abuja by EFCC operatives, adding that she has been in the anti-graft custody in Lagos since last week.

A source disclosed that Lara’s lawyer has been making attempts to secure her release but had not gotten any positive result.

She was arrested after the sum of N3 billion was traced to her bank accounts. The money is believed to be part of the sum her husband is being probed for.

The source further hinted that some properties belonging to the former CAS were also held in trust for him by Lara and her children.

There were earlier reports that the anti-graft watch dog discovered a whooping sum of N17.5 billion in the accounts of wives of three airforce chiefs. The monies were reportedly disseminated in various banks accounts.

A source acquainted with the ongoing arms probe disclosed that N13 billion was traced to the bank accounts of the wife of a retired Air Vice Marshal, who held strategic position in the Nigeria Air Force (NAF), adding that N1.5 billion was also discovered in the account of another serving senior officer. These officers handled the finance, budget and accounts of NAF.

The source said: “Shortly after Amosu was picked up in Abuja, his wife, Lara, was subsequently arrested. Investigations conducted showed that some of the monies the former Chief of Air Staff made through some contracts and procurements in NAF were traced to his wife’s accounts.

“About N3 billion was traced to the wife’s accounts while some assets acquired by the former service chief was in her name and some others in her company’s name.

“So, Lara is an accessory to a crime. The proceeds with her are from the arms funds. As we prosecute her husband, she must also be held accountable.”

It was gathered that the anti-graft agency pulled out the sum of $1 million cash from Amosu’s residence in Badagary, Lagos. The foreign currency was discovered when operatives carried out a search on the house.

The source said: “In continuation of the investigation into the arms probe, the EFCC operatives took Amosu to his residence in Badagry. After a thorough search of the residence, a fresh small ‘soakaway’ pit was discovered in the compound. The operatives suspected foul play, which informed the breaking of the ‘soakaway’. Surprisingly, $1 million was found in it. The money was subsequently confiscated.”

The EFCC arrested Amosu, Adigun, and Air Commodore O. Gbadebo two weeks ago over their involvement in the $2.1 billion arms scandal.

It was gathered that the EFCC flew the indicted officers to Lagos in an airforce aircraft. They were allegedly discreetly kept in a hotel. The EFCC mobilised the indicted officers to assets traced to them and suspected to have been acquired with monies gotten from the arms deal. The anti-graft agency had sealed off some of the said properties.

The Federal Government on November 30, 2015 directed the EFCC to prosecute the ex-CAS, who is also being investigated for over 10 NAF contracts totaling $930,500,690 awarded to Societe D’ Equipments Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd. between January 2014 and February 2015.

The probe panel disclosed that the contacts award letters show misleading delivery dates, suggesting fraudulent intention in the award process.

However, the EFCC had asked Amosu and others, who are still being detained over the $2.1bn arms deal, to refund some money or contract sums traced to them, but they have remained adamant.
