From JUDEX OKORO, Calabar
The Cross River State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that the return of Governor Liyel Imoke took the party by surprise, as they least expected him over the weekend. Imoke left the state on November 19, 2012 to the United States for a medical check up and later wrote to the state Assembly on December 6, 2012, requesting for a two month accumulated leave.
He arrived Calabar unannounced late last Friday, beating some political supporters, who would have wanted to make fanfare of his return. Speaking to Daily Sun, the state PDP Chairman, Mr. John Okon said it would have been imperative to give the governor a grand welcome. Okon said: "Imoke is a leader we believe in so much, his arrival caught us by surprise. He beat us to it. We never expected this weekend. In short we thought the acting governor would have announced date of his arrival. "There are, however, no immediate plans for reception. But note that during his absence, the affairs of the state ran smoothly.
We pray he continues with his sense of humility. "Perhaps, he (Imoke) wanted to avoid crowds and unnecessary protocols. There is no need for frivolities. He has come back to business and we thank God he came home safely," he stated. In a statement made available yesterday to reporters, Imoke expressed his gratitude "to the president, his wife, the vice president and his wife, good people of the state, the media, friends and well wishers of the state for their kind words, love, care, concern and understanding during his absence. Meanwhile, Governor Liyel Imoke has expressed his appreciation to his deputy, Mr. Efiok Cobham, members of the state House of Assembly and the state executive council for steering the ship of the state well.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Ita, said Imoke, who returned to the state last Friday, said he is also grateful for the kind words and uncommon empathy shown by Nigerians, the media and lovers of Cross River State. It further quoted Imoke as saying that he returns home with renewed vigour for the task of furthering the growth and development of the state.
"His Excellency has returned home recharged and energized for the task of furthering the growth and development of the state, which in the past five years had not only become a tourist’s destination, but was also now becoming an investment hub in Nigeria." Investigations by Daily Sun revealed that Governor Imoke is expected to resume work officially within the week.
