Not very many people are aware that March 8 of every year is the International Day of Women all over the world. This is a unlike May 27 which is the Children’s day worldwide or the Independence Day of each country all over the world. Despite this widespread state of unawareness, the International Day of Women has been celebrated since 18th Century.
What therefore is International Day of Women all about? The struggle for women’s rights began in the 18th century during a period of intense intellectual activity known as the Age of Enlightenment. However, it was not until the 19th century when the denial of equal rights to women attracted protests and drew attention from most activists. B
y then most women were educationally backward and lacked the economic empowerment that would enable them challenge the prevailing order. Hence, women generally accepted their fate. In the 19th century, the governments in Europe and North America began to draft new laws guaranteeing equality among men. In 1913, International Women’s Day was fixed for 8 March and this day has remained so since then. This year should be a centenary celebration. To be candid, the primary role of women at home and in nation building disqualify them from playing the second fiddle. From research, it was discovered that women constitute approximately 51% of a nation population.
In other word, if they are given the task of the developing the country, they will surprise us and definitely perform wonder. An average woman is more dedicated, more hardworking, more prudent, more God fearing, more sincere, more devoted, less tribalistic and more focused. In my own candid opinion, the womenfolk should see the International Day of Women as a day of total reflection on events and developments as far back as 18th century. They should count their gains and losses so far and resolve not to rest on their oars.
They should continue to forge ahead for increase campaign and intensify their struggle for women’s emancipation towards building a virile nation. Someone once said “There is no chance for the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved.
It is not possible for a bird to fly on only one wing” All over the universe, “women are seen as the builders and moulders of a nation’s destiny, though delicate and soft as lily, she has a heart, stronger and bolder than that of man, she is the supreme inspiration for man’s onward march” I am therefore and strongly appealing to the womenfolk to make use of their God given virtues to make a change in the governance and leadership of this country particularly where the men in government have failed the masses in the distribution of the dividends of democracy.
The women with their God given feminine attributes may find it easier to curb bribery and corruption which has become endemic in our system, especially when women in authority are always seen as “No Nonsense women”.
The mental and physical contact of women with life is much more lasting and comprehensive than that of men.The International Day of women should be a platform to assess the roles of women in the family and in nation building rather than exhibiting fanfare or mere assessment of who is better between men and women.
As to who is better between men and women, the Scripture says “by their fruits you shall know them”. Women should be committed to their primary role of home building and nation building. They should Train their children on how to have good relationship with their spouses in anticipation to establish godly families for nation building The urgent task now for women folk is their motherly concern about how to restore godly values and chastity to the girl-child in our present generation. Today, moral decadence has soared in our contemporary society.
This is very sad and serious. Let us ask ourselves: where were the godly mothers when the youths drifted into prostitution, sexual violence, promiscuity, adultery, pornography, nude dressing, armed robbery, bleaching, alcoholism, examination malpractices, 419 syndrome, drug addiction, smoking, kidnapping and other evil devices? The women folk should rise up to play the role that will bring the evil devices of our children to the barest minimum. Our womenfolk are expected to use this occasion to condemn and dissociate themselves from same sex marriage; that is Homosexual.
In the past, lack of education among the females contributed to their set back and marginalization. The womenfolk should form a formidable group to motivate and create interest and awareness among females to improve female education for women. Education among women should no longer be handled with levity. Someone once said, “Like men, women were naturally rational.
Education should cultivate the natural reasoning capacity in girl”. “Equality in marriage would only come about with equality of education.” The International Day of Women should pose a great challenge to womenfolk on how better they can restore moral and godly values to our system and society.
No wonder one said, “Give me a generation of godly women and I will undertake to change the whole society within twelve months”. Motherhood is the greatest vocation in the world. Mothers rear and nurture great leaders of tomorrow. Women have the power to influence and restore respect and dignity that were originally accorded them. They are in the best position to wage war against nude dressing or half- nakedness which dishonours the respect and dignity meant for womenfolk.
Women should be equipped physically and spiritually to be able to perform effectively and efficiently their sacred motherly roles in the society. This is the only way they can restore their lost glory. The women folk should clamour for the services of the NGOS to correct many ills among the youths, if we must have a better NIGERIA.
They should not close their eyes or fold their hands and see our value system collapse. Many social evils and delinquencies like abortion, abandonment of new born baby, prostitution, illiteracy among female etc can be tackled by the active involvement of women rendering services through the NGOs. The women folk should strive for exalted political, economic, social and religious positions to make a positive change in our system of governance.
Awareness of qualitative education and civilization should be brought to rural women who are presently backward. “Charity, they say, begins from home? Hence women have vital roles to play in nation building as ideal nurses, doctors, administrators, teachers, priests, consultants and true defenders of the children in term of nurturing and upbringing of their wards.
It is high time the women took seriously the issue of rearing, nurturing and training their children in the way of God Almighty so that when they grow old, they will not depart from it. Proper home and religious education could curb unfortunate incidents like the emergences of the Boko-Haram sects and other societal vices. In conclusion, women should see themselves as fore-front crusaders for good governance to the masses which their men counterpart have not been able to give satisfactorily. Women by nature are peace makers.
They are blessed with the tact and skill to convince and drive an argument to a logical conclusion. Thus your services as women and mothers are more urgently needed in building up national integrity in such a time like this. A Woman’s heart is always overflowing with milk of human kindness.
The nation needs your motherly services to impact our society in such a critical time like this when the security of lives and properties of our nation is at stake. Without exaggeration, women can play a very important role in nation building, if men would give them the opportunity. It is true that the worth of civilization of any society can be measured by the place it gives to its women. “Where women are honoured, there gods live”.
I look forward for a day that a woman activist in the house of Assembly would raise a motion to pass a bill for public holidays on March 8, for National Women’s Day. This will make men honour and recognize their mothers, wives and females colleagues better. Wishing you a happy and meaningful celebration of the International Women’s Day.
