No amnesty for Boko Haram – Jonathan

No amnesty for Boko Haram – Jonathan

…Presidency can’t pardon ‘ghosts’

From Ezeh Chibuoke, Abuja & Fidelis Murphy, Maiduguri

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday declared he would not grant amnesty to members of the Islamic fundamentalist group, Boko Haram, unless they show themselves physically for negotiations.

Jonathan maintained he would not discriminate against any part of the country. “Basically, my coming to Yobe is to assure the people that I don’t discriminate.

The issue of terrorists like I have always said that when there is terrorism in any part of the world, it affects the whole world because victims may not necessarily come from where the attack took place. Look at what happened in Bauchi State when some expatriates were kidnapped, I got calls from presidents of their countries.

So it is a global issue,” he declared. The President said his delayed visit to the state was also as a result of the change of National Security Adviser (NSA) recently as it had been planned even before retired Col. Sambo Dasuki’s appointment.

The President spoke at a town hall meeting in Damaturu, one of the areas worst hit with killings of persons and bombings of private and public buildings by the terrorist sect. Responding to demands for amnesty for Boko Haram by some professionals and stakeholders in Yobe State, led by former minister of finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, the President said he would not grant such to a group that has remained “ghosts” since no one has yet to come forth to admit membership of the deadly sect. According to him, “you cannot declare amnesty for ghosts.
