The Police in Rivers said one student died in a stampede at Ignatius University Hostel, Rumulumeni, near Port Harcourt, while six other students were hospitalised.
Mr Ben Ugwuegbulam, the police command’s spokesman, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, said that the injured students had been hospitalised.
He said the stampede was due to false alarm that the one-storey, students’ hostel was about to collapse at about 3.30 a.m. on Wednesday.Ugwuegbulam said the students had rushed out of the building, causing the stampede.
He said one of the students died while six others were injured during the stampede. The spokesman said the police had commenced investigation into the incident.
Other unconfirmed sources said the stampede was due to a vibration in the building which forced the occupants to rush out.
The university authority has yet to issue a statement on the incident. The capacity of the hostel could not be disclosed by the police.
